Examination regulations GAP

Excerpt from the examination regulations:

Exercise 1: Leadership (and group of people)

  1. a) Command: A command is allowed when approaching, turning and changing pace.
  2. b) Execution: The dog handler goes to the judge with his dog on a leash, lets the dog sit down on his left side and introduces himself. The leash must be held loosely and slack in the left hand.

From the basic position, the dog must follow the handler attentively, happily, closely and straight, with the shoulder blade always at knee level on the handler's left side and sit down independently, quickly and straight when stopping.

At the beginning of the exercise, the dog handler takes his dog 50 steps straight ahead without stopping, after the U-turn (it is to be carried out on the left or right, but always the same within the test) and another 10 to 15 steps are the running step and the slow step (each at least 10 steps) to show. The transition from running to slow pace must be carried out without any intermediate steps. The different gaits must differ significantly in speed. In the normal step, at least one right, left and about turn must then be carried out. Stopping must be shown at least once from the normal pace.

The dog handler then walks through a group of at least four people with his dog at the instruction of the test leader / judge, with one person leading a well-socialized, calm dog on the left side on a leash. After 10 to 15 steps there is a U-turn outside the group, the dog handler goes to the middle of the group of people and stops there, whereby the dog should sit down independently, quickly and straight. At the instruction of the test leader / judge, the dog handler leaves the group with his dog and goes back to the exit.

  1. c) Assessment: running forward, deviating to the side, lagging behind, additional commands and body aids, inattentiveness and / or depressedness of the dog as well as too great an interest in the people in the group of people or the dog being carried are devalued accordingly.

Exercise 2: laying down

  1. a) Command: A command is allowed when approaching, laying down and sitting down.
  2. b) Execution: The dog handler takes his dog in the basic position and leashes it off. Starting from the basic position, the handler walks straight ahead with his dog, which is free to follow. After 10 to 15 steps the handler stops and the dog should sit down independently, quickly and straight next to the handler. When given a command, the dog should lie down quickly and straight from the basic position. The dog handler walks another 20 paces, stops, and immediately turns to face his dog. At the instruction of the test leader / judge, the dog handler goes back to his dog and stands on its right side. The dog should remain lying on the return. At the instruction of the test leader / judge, the dog handler brings his dog into a sitting position.
  3. c) Evaluation: Defects in development, the dog does not sit down or sits down hesitantly, slowly lying down, lying restlessly, standing up or sitting up when the handler returns without being asked to devalue accordingly.

Exercise 3: Stopping from the movement and approaching

  1. a) Command: A command is allowed when approaching, setting down, calling and taking the basic position.
  2. b) Execution: From the basic position, the dog handler walks straight ahead with his dog following freely. After 10 to 15 steps, the dog has to sit quickly and straight on a command, without the dog handler interrupting his gait, changing or looking around. After a further 20 steps, the handler stops and immediately turns to face his dog. At the instruction of the test leader / judge, the dog handler throws a dummy at an angle of approx. 60 degrees, which is supposed to come to rest with a waiting helper approx. 10 paces away from the dog handler. At the instruction of the test leader / judge, the dog handler calls his dog to him. This should come quickly and directly to the dog handler and immediately take the basic position next to him.

In the basic position, the dog is on a leash. Then go back directly to the exit.

  1. c) Evaluation: Defects in development, slow sitting down and restless sitting. If the dog lies down or stops instead of sitting, 5 points are deducted. Slow entry. Running in the direction of the retrieval object (which the helper takes away from the dog). The dog does not go into the basic position or does not go into the correct position. This devalues accordingly.

Exercise 4: retrieving (single marking)

  1. a) Command: A command is allowed when sending the dog and once for returning.
  2. b) Execution: The dog handler takes his dog in the basic position and leashes it off. At the instruction of the test leader / judge, a helper throws a dummy in a high arc about 50 paces away, which is supposed to fall to the ground in a straight line to the handler / dog. At the instruction of the test leader / judge, the dog is sent to retrieve. The dog should run in a straight line to the dummy, pick it up immediately, return to the handler in a straight line and quickly and hand it over to him cleanly. The handler must not walk towards the dog or bend forward strongly while stretching his hands far forward.
  3. c) Evaluation: The dog does not mark. He runs to the dummy without a command (jumps in). It doesn't run in a straight line. He does not pick up the dummy immediately or play with it. It does not come back in a straight line or it slows down. The delivery does not take place directly in the hand. This devalues accordingly.

Exercise 5: Behavior of the dog towards passers-by

  1. a) Command: A command is allowed when taking the basic position.
  2. b) Execution: At least 3 dog handlers line up with their leashed dogs in a row with a lateral distance of approx. 1 m. After approx. 1 minute, at the instruction of the test leader / judge, at least 4 people talking at a distance of approx. 2 m walk past the dog handlers and their dogs. After about 1 minute they go back the same way, stop briefly and speak to the dog handler. The dogs should remain seated and behave calmly. After that, the person move on again. The examiner / judge then declares the exercise to be over.
  3. c) Assessment: The dogs do not stay seated or appear restless or fearful. This devalues accordingly.

Exercise 1: free heeling (and group of people)

  1. a) Command: A command is allowed when approaching, turning and changing pace.
  2. b) Execution: The dog handler goes to the judge with his dog on a leash, lets the dog sit down on his left side and introduces himself. Then the dog is leashed.

Exercise 2: retrieving (double marking)

  1. a) Command: A command is allowed when the dog is sent and once for the return.
  2. b) Execution: The dog handler assumes the basic position with his dog, which is not on a leash, at the marked point. It is up to the handler whether he sits the dog in the middle (the dummies are thrown at an angle of approx. 120 degrees) or in the direction of the markings. At a distance of approx. 30 paces, at the instruction of the test leader / judge, dummy 1 is thrown to the right of the dog handler and after approx. 3 seconds to the left, dummy 2. The dummies should be thrown by a helper. At the instruction of the test leader / judge, the last thrown dummy 2 is to be retrieved first. The dog must then be sent to retrieve the first dummy 1 thrown.
  3. c) Evaluation: Repeatedly setting up the dog in the direction of the fall points, jumping in, running in a non-straight line, running in the wrong direction, looking for lost, no immediate acceptance, running back in arcs or hesitant return and no clean delivery devalue accordingly.

Exercise 3: Search (Small Search)

Appropriate vegetation / cover is required for this exercise!

  1. a) Command: A command is allowed when sending the dog, for searching and once for returning.
  2. b) Execution: In a search area of approx. 15 x 15 steps with correspondingly high vegetation, two invisible dummies were laid out for the dog handler and dog. The dog handler assumes the basic position with the dog that is not on a leash at a marked point that is approx. 10 to 15 paces away from the search area. At the instruction of the examiner / judge, a helper goes around the search area and fires a shot in the middle of the rear side with a signal weapon aimed at the ground. After the helper has returned, the dog can be sent independently into the search area. Both dummies are to be brought.
  3. c) Evaluation: jumping in, not accepting the search command, leaving the search area without the dog being able to be fetched back or leaving the search area several times, exchanging dummies, hesitating to come back and not returning the dog properly, devalue accordingly.

If the dog can be retrieved immediately after leaving the search area once, this does not devalue the exercise.

The dog can be sent a second time to each dummy, but 2 points are deducted for each.

Exercise 4: Instruct (send ahead in a straight line)

  1. a) Command: A command is allowed when approaching, setting down the dog before laying out the dummy, approaching (going back), sending the dog ahead, at the fall point and once for coming back.
  2. b) Execution: The dog handler assumes the basic position with his dog at a marked point. At the instruction of the test leader / judge, he goes with his dog, which is not on a leash, to a place approx. 50 paces away, e.g. Then he returns to his dog and walks the dog back to the starting point. At the instruction of the test supervisor / judge, he sends his dog to retrieve the dummy.
  3. c) Assessment: Inadequate footwork, failure to accept the command to run ahead, hesitant and not straight running out, stopping and looking around for the dog handler, extensive search for the dummy, no immediate pick-up, slow running back and not showing a straight line, and no clean delivery of the dummy devalue accordingly.

Exercise 5: calm dog behavior

  1. a) Command: The dog can, for example, be given the command "Free".
  2. b) Execution: The dog handler goes with his dog on a leash to a place on the edge of the practice area assigned by the test director / judge. The dog does not have to take a certain position or can change it. He must remain calm and must not pull on the leash while another dog shows exercises 1 to 4. The dog handler has to behave neutrally.
  1. c) Evaluation: restless behavior, whimpering or barking, tugging on the leash devalue accordingly.

Exercise 1: Walk Up

  1. a) Command: Commands can be given when approaching, walking away from the dog (if the handler fetches the dummy himself) as well as when sending the dog and once for the return.
  2. b) Execution: The dog handler takes the basic position with his dog at the place assigned by the test leader / judge. The dog is leashed on the instruction of the test leader / judge. Then you walk slowly in a line about 50 steps in one direction and then back again after a turn. When walking, a dummy with a shot is thrown by a helper, who walks sideways and at a distance of approx. 15 paces in front of the team, so that it comes to a lie approx. 30 paces in front of the team. The handler stops immediately and fetches the dummy himself. When walking back, another dummy is thrown in the same way as the first dummy. The handler also stops immediately. The dog is supposed to retrieve this dummy.
  3. c) Evaluation: Whimpering, poor footwork, jumping in and incorrect retrieval devalue accordingly.

Exercise 2: Marking and Searching

  1. a) A command can be given when sending the dog and for searching.
  2. b) Execution: The dog handler assumes the basic position with his dog that is not on a leash at a marked point. It is up to the dog handler whether he or she aligns the dog in the middle (the search area and the fall point of the dummy to be thrown are at an angle of approx. 90 degrees) or in the direction of the marking. The dummy is shot at. Then a dummy is thrown at a distance of approx. 50 paces on the instruction of the test leader / judge to the right of the dog handler. At the instruction of the test leader / judge, the dog handler turns the dog in the direction of a search area approx. 30 paces away and sends his dog to search. Then the dog is to be sent to retrieve the thrown dummy independently.
  3. c) Evaluation: Repeatedly setting up the dog in the direction of the fall point, jumping in, running in the wrong direction, running in a non-straight line, looking for free, no immediate acceptance, running back in arcs or hesitant return and no clean delivery devalue accordingly.

The dog can be instructed accordingly when searching. If the dog accepts the commands and succeeds within a reasonable time, this does not devalue the exercise.

Exercise 3: Instruction (left, right or backwards)

  1. a) Command: A command can be given when approaching, turning, sending the dog and searching.
  2. b) Execution: The dog handler assumes the basic position with his dog that is not on a leash at a marked point. At the instruction of the test leader / judge, the dog handler walks about 30 paces straight ahead with his dog following well and sets the dog down after turning in the direction of the starting point. Then the handler moves about 15 paces away and turns to the dog. The dog is now sent backwards to the left, right or in a straight line at the instruction of the test leader / judge. The direction was determined by lot before the start of the test. Before the exercise, the dummy to be fetched is to be laid out invisibly for the dog at a distance of approx. 15 paces.
  3. c) Assessment: Incorrect following free on foot, running back to the dog handler, assuming the wrong direction, looking for free, walking around or hesitating to come back and no clean delivery devalue accordingly.

Exercise 4: Instruction (ahead in a straight line with distraction)

  1. a) Command: A command can be given when sending the dog and when searching.
  2. b) Execution: The dog handler assumes the basic position with his dog, which is not on a leash, at a marked point. At the instruction of the test leader / judge, a shot with a signal weapon is fired at a distance of approx. 50 paces in the direction of a dummy that was previously laid out so that the dog was not able to see it. Before the dog is sent to retrieve on the instruction of the test leader / judge, a seduction dummy is thrown away from the team to the right of the dog handler at a distance of approx. 10 paces. After approx. 3 seconds the dog handler can independently send the dog to retrieve the dummy that is not visually displayed.
  3. c) Evaluation: jumping in, running in the direction of the seductive dummy, running out in a non-straight line, not accepting the search command, searching for free, walking around or hesitating to come back and not making a clean delivery devalue accordingly.

Exercise 5: retrieving from the water

  1. a) Command: A command can be given to approach and retrieve.
  2. b) Execution: The dog handler assumes the basic position with his unleashed dog at a marked point on the bank of the water. At the instruction of the test leader / judge, a dummy is thrown into the water with a shot on the left side of the dog handler / dog. The dummy should fall well away from the bank and visibly into the water. At the instruction of the test leader / judge, the dog handler turns around with his dog and takes about 10 steps away from the bank, then turns and stops. After approx. 3 seconds the handler can send his dog to retrieve independently.
  3. c) Evaluation: restless behavior, jumping in, poor footwork, walking around on the bank, hesitant acceptance of the water, placing the dummy on the bank, excessive shaking before delivery and no clean delivery devalue accordingly.

Exercise 5: standing (as an alternative to water work)

  1. a) Command: A (seat) command can be given before the start of driving.
  2. b) Execution: At least three dog handlers and their dogs take the basic position in front of a row of trees or bushes (e.g. edge of the forest) at a distance of 10 to 15 paces and approx. 5 paces to the next team. The dogs are leashed on the instruction of the test leader / judge. At least 4 people take part in the hustle and bustle. They do not or only partially visibly noisy for the dogs and go back the same way after a short waiting time. 4 shots are fired when driving. After the drive, the dogs are leashed again on the instruction of the test leader / judge.

If the handler wishes, the dog can remain on a leash. In this case, 10 points will be deducted.

  1. c) Evaluation: A restless behavior at the stand and jumping in will devalue accordingly.
