THE GOLDEN RETRIEVER

The Golden Retriever - "Golden", as it is often shortened - was bred in Scotland around the middle of the 19th century for hunting, especially in areas with lots of water and cover. But it was not until 1911 that it was registered as an independent breed by the English Kennel Club. His original task was to retrieve shot game from the water or from thick undergrowth for his master or, thanks to his excellent nose, to lead the hunter to the shot game. The strong will to search, find and bring and the soft mouth that is characteristic of the Golden makes it the ideal helper when hunting small game even today.

The Golden is a friendly, lively and at the same time trusting dog with a gentle expression. Thanks to his easy handling, his tolerance, his child-friendliness and his particularly good-natured nature, he is often referred to as the ideal family and beginner dog. He has a balanced temperament and faces many everyday situations with serenity and fearlessness. He loves the water and no puddle is too dirty for him.

But also the Golden Retriever should be educated, challenged and encouraged from the beginning, only in this way can he show his good qualities. The Golden is absolutely unsuitable for keeping in a kennel, it should be integrated into family life, this is the only way that it will absolutely attach itself to its human being, like to subordinate itself and love to participate in all activities of its human pack. The Golden would like to be employed and encouraged through his pronounced will to obedience and to want to make everything right for his people (will top please). Dummy work is particularly suitable for him! Here, too, he loves variety and shows great joy when he is allowed to bring something to his person.

The same characteristics, paired with steadfastness, calm and perseverance and a great philanthropy, are what make it possible to use it as a rescue dog, guide dog, handicapped companion and therapy dog. However, he lacks the sharpness for a guard dog and guard function.

Over the course of many years, the Golden Retriever has divided into show and work lines, which can already be seen from the external appearance. The show type is a bit heavier, often stockier and with more fur, which often means less stamina and stamina, while the work type is a bit slimmer, longer-legged and with a little less fur, but with more work temperament and endurance. Show or work type, both are equally adorable!
