PROCEDURE OF THE ÖRC ENTITY TEST

According to the decision of the board of the ÖRC from August 26th, 2000, from 1.1.2001 the completion of the character test of the ÖRC with an attached breed show or the completion of the JBP / R, BLP, VGP or Working Test L (novice) with water work is required for breeding approval.

The test is designed in such a way that every retriever owner should be able to complete the test with his dog without much preparatory training. A very good bond between owner and dog is therefore required. Attending a puppy play group or a young dog course as well as an intensive occupation with the puppy or young dog is recommended in this context.

Only one person is allowed to walk the dog during the test. Changing dog handlers during the test is not permitted. Spectators are not allowed.

Every dog handler is liable for the damage caused by him or his dog.

Age limit: Retrievers from at least 9 months to 4 years of age are allowed to take the character test.

Bitches in heat and dogs that are under the influence of medication and / or have undergone other veterinary interventions (e.g. chemical castration, chip castration, psychotropic drugs and the like) are not permitted to take part in the character test. (decided by the ÖRC board on January 13, 2013)

Repetition: If the test is not passed, it is possible to repeat the character test twice with a different judge. Retrievers who have failed the character test 3 times cannot obtain breeding approval in the ÖRC. (decided by the ÖRC board on July 22, 2012).

Retrievers who received the exclusion reason “aggression” in 2 character tests cannot obtain a breeding license in the ÖRC and receive an event ban in the ÖRC (decided by the ÖRC board on July 22, 2012).

Breeding-relevant properties and meaning of the character test

The purpose of the character test is to identify typical representatives of a breed and to exclude animals with missing or undesirable predispositions from breeding.

Desired essentials:

Self-confident, friendly, trusting, attentive, interested, enjoys playing, good dog-handler relationship (attachment), good prey and retrieval instinct, effective weather absorption, enjoys water and is bulletproof.

Undesirable characteristics:

Suspicious, insecure, fearful, aggressive, no play instinct, poor or no handler-dog relationship (lack of attachment), no prey and retrieval instinct, no exposure to the weather, afraid of water and gunshot.

The following procedure applies until the Internet registration is complete:

The registration form and the questionnaire can be downloaded from the ÖRC website under the essence test section
downloaded.

We ask you to read both forms carefully, fill them in and then send them with a copy of the payment slip by post or email to the organization office (Franz Buchgraber, St. Dionysenstraße 46, 8600 Oberaich, [email protected]).
You will also find the payment modalities on the registration form.

Registration deadline: 4 weeks before the character test
About 2 weeks before the character test you will receive a letter by post or email with directions to the venue and the approximate start time.

Course of the character test with an attached breed show

As soon as you arrive at the event site, please report to the registration.
There you will receive a colored collar and a pin in the same color for your dog, which you should attach to your clothing so that it is clearly visible. The first chip check also takes place here.
When registering, you can find out whether the scheduled start time can be adhered to or how long a possible waiting time will be.

The participants are divided into groups which, if possible, should consist of males and females of different breeds of retrievers. The judges are drawn into the groups.

Your judge will meet you when you register.

Please note that during the entire character test your retriever is under observation by the character judge (i.e. also in the waiting phases) so that the judge can get an overall picture of the dog.

Once the judge has taken over the group, he will briefly introduce himself to you and go through the questionnaire for each dog.
You now have the opportunity to point out things to the judge that may be of importance for the character test: Has your dog ever had a particularly bad experience with people, fellow species or in an environmental situation? Is your bitch about to come into heat or has she recently been in heat? All of this and the like can affect your dog's behavior and the judge should know this so that he can cater to your dog.
